本书是圣经辅导学的奠基之作。作者指出当代建立在弗洛伊德心理学理论基础上的辅导方法，使人不必承担责任，常常难以凑效，并且导致现代社会伦理的丧失。作者认为大部分的精神病症背后的原因，都存在罪——道德性的过犯的问题。与“罗杰斯式辅导”等仅主张旁观聆听，促成对方情绪的发泄的方法不同，作者提出“劝诫式辅导法”，把源于圣经的规劝打人心理，促成受辅导者个性及行为的改变。通过让人承认自己的过犯，承担责任，借着信仰，重建希望，直到最后促成受辅导者行为习惯的改变，以及品格的重塑。
