该书分为两编，第一编“史学理论”，第二编“史学史”。该书根据作者的精神哲学体系来说明历史，认为精神就是世界，它是一种发展着的东西，分为美、真、益、善四个部分。精神的自我意识就是哲学，哲学就是精神的自我意识的历史，或者说，历史就是精神的自我意识的哲学。历史与哲学两者在本质上是同一的。反对实证主义历史哲学，提出思想产生历史，思想活动就是历史。认为精神的方式有差别也有统一，它们的具体活动即发展与历史。认为一切历史都是当代史，因为研究历史总是现时现刻的思想活动，研究历史问题都是由现时现刻的兴趣所决定。而且对该历史问题的解释是从现时现刻的兴趣来思考和理解的。如果没有现时的兴趣使人们想到某一历史事件，则这个事件不会引起人们的思考，这个事件也不会在人们的思想中复苏。
