Translation of: The NIV Application Commentary Genesis
創世記是聖經的首卷書，講述了世界受造、人類墮落、洪水與方舟、巴別塔的故事、以色列祖的經歷等等，但正如作者華爾頓指出，這卷書的目的乃是要啟示神自己，而神用以啟示自己的工具，就是聖約，所以創世記其實是聖約的歷史。一至十一章說明為何需要聖約；因為人類犯罪、影響最終波及整個受造界、人對神的認識越來越扭曲，殘缺不全。十二至五十章記述聖約的產生及發展，神如何藉著這約啟示他自己。此外，賜福/祝福的主題貫穿全書，是創世記的主幹。
華爾頓熟識古代近東文化，運用比較研究，拓寬讀者對當代背景的認識。他見解獨到，能啟發讀者思考。而且他列舉的例子豐富生動，貼近生活，引導讀者活用經文於現今的時代。
