伊曼努尔·康德（1724-1804）是大家知道的德国古典哲学家。“道德形上学探本”是康德讲伦理学的一部书。在《汉译世界学术名著丛书：道德形上学探本》里，他以为道德上的善恶，行为的是非的标准，是超乎经验的形式的原则。人作为有理性者，为自己定下道德规律（形式），这种规律，不管经验如何，是普遍适用的，换言之，道德规律是超乎经验的。他以为道德在于为义务而尽义务；道德只关行为的动机如何，与行为的效果如何无关。不特追求对私人一已有利的效果的行为不是道德的行为，就是出于对别人的自然同情的行为也不是道德的行为；只有出于纯粹义务心，撇开利己心、同情心等等的行为才可以算是道德的行为。
在该书中，康德以为道德上的善恶，行为的是非标准，是超乎经验的兴衰的原则。人作为有理性者，为自己定下道德规律，这种规律是普遍适用的。康德所谓的道德形上学正是研究道德的超乎经验的纯粹形式。
